If you love learning about new or reborn sub-cultures and social trends Betty is the series for you. The nineties had the over the top fashion fest of ‘Sex in the City’, the ‘noughties’ had the female angst and comedy-drama of Lena Dunham’s, white, privileged ‘Girls’ and now we have ‘Betty’ – (historically a derogatory term for a girl who hangs out with surfers or skaters, but now worn as a badge of honour by a super cool NY female skate crew). These girls are strong, independent and add their own individual style and voice to the narrative.
‌The series is based on Crytal Moselle’s 2018 film Skate Kitchen and brings most of the cast of the original movie to the series – Dede Lovelace, Moonbear, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell, and Rachelle Vinberg,
The styling is authentic – Stussy, Vans, Awake, Nike, Supreme etc and is a feast for the fashion-inclined, especially for people interested in looking cool while being comfortable. The women in Betty have the kind of effortless, “Why didn’t I think of that?” style that will be emulated by the fashion forward on their release from quarantine. Pasties as a shirt, a bike chain as a necklace, lightweight cargo pants paired with teeny tiny crop tops. It will be interesting to see if this changes as the series and the girls gain mainstream momentum and more high profile brands want a slice of the skate action.
Skate culture has been around for over 55 years and it’s amazing to see it being reclaimed and re-birthed by a group of slightly weird, ethnically diverse, free spirits. Watch now on HBO.
