If you haven’t seen this, watch it now. Unbelievable and absolutely frightening true story.
However for me the stand out ingredient of its success is the attention to detail. The costumes are a triumph, capturing the kitsch and slick flare of the 70’s and contrasting beautifully with the ‘turn on, tune in, drop out’ attitude of the hippy travellers’ garb.
The naivety of the 60’s leftovers exploited by the enigmatic but deeply evil main character Charles Sobhraj is at times shocking. Authentic creative direction from Adam Howe amplifies the cultural and stylistic differences through strong, true to the period styling outfitting, for example, the villain, played by Tahar Rahim wears a sharp, single breasted suit cut from an original DAKS pattern, whilst Jenna Coleman (who plays Marie-Andree his accomplice) wears a teal trouser suit in one scene from an original YSL block, glasses were vintage Metzler.
Their razor sharp ruthlessness amplified by their sharp attire, contrasts vividly with the laid back vibe of their victims on the 70’s hippy trails of Thailand and Nepal.
